In Our Bookmarks: our team’s favorite CRE news sources

Today’s commercial real estate industry is a rollercoaster. From hotel bankruptcies and urban flight to the rapid growth of wholly new micro-markets and workspace models, one could spend hours scanning business publications, company updates, and Twitter feeds to stay on top of what’s happening.

Because (now more than ever) efficiency is everything, we polled our team and put together this quick list of the go-to CRE blogs and news sources we read daily. Here are the top 8 commercial real estate outlets in our browser bookmarks.

Our 8 top CRE blogs & sites

1. Bisnow

Bisnow has feelers out in more than 25 major markets across the U.S., UK and Canada, prides itself in breaking news, and dispatches city-specific weekly newsletters with the week’s top stories to more than a half million subscribers in the industry. They are just as known for their industry networking events as their newsroom, and during the pandemic, events went digital. On the bright side of that, their webinars are that much easier to fit into our schedules.

2. The Real Deal

CRE professionals in the U.S.’s top markets can’t afford not to follow The Real Deal. Originally focused on New York, this blog has expanded to cover L.A., Chicago, and Miami, with city-specific pages that make it easy to track the news that’s most relevant to you.

3. The Wall Street Journal, CRE Section

WSJ’s commercial real estate page is one of our favorites for deep dives at the intersection of CRE and news-based trends, i.e. Brexit, U.S. politics, or the cannabis industry.

4. JLL Trends & Insights

JLL’s Trends & Insights page is a great resource for economic forecasts and data-based takes on global industry trends. Plus, their focus on the modern workplace sets them apart.

5. CBRE’s The Way Forward

Like JLL, CBRE’s site is full of resources we find helpful, i.e. their case studies on industry success stories, but we like to keep an eye on their “The Way Forward” blog for research-driven insights on market outlooks and for thought leadership on the future of work.

6. NAIOP Research and Publications

You might already be familiar with the NAIOP (the Commercial Real Estate Development Association) and their trade magazine—don’t miss their website. The organization’s Research and Publications page offers a trove of data-driven resources and well-researched deep dives on the state of the market — and the impact of global factors like the COVID-19 pandemic.

7. Urban Land Institute

Founded (under a different name) in 1936 as a real estate research and education college also focused on “urbiculture,” ULI is one of the oldest players in CRE thought leadership. Only members can access their full knowledge base, but that monthly fee comes with a lot of other perks. Meanwhile, summaries and PDFs of research reports on real estate topics from diversity to sustainability to industry resilience to wildfires and climate change are available via their homepage.
